The Effect of Huel on Markers of Inflammation

This research wants to find out if eating Huel products can change how much inflammation healthy people have in their bodies. Thirty healthy adults will take part. First, their inflammation levels will be measured. Then, for four weeks, they'll eat two Huel ready-to-eat meals and other Huel products each day, alongside their regular food intake. The researchers will check their inflammation levels again after one week and after four weeks to see if there are any changes. The goal is to see if any of the nine specific inflammation markers they are monitoring are affected by eating Huel.

What is this study about?

Imagine your body sometimes gets a bit irritated or swollen — that's inflammation. It's a natural part of how your body protects itself, like when you get a cut and it goes red. But sometimes, inflammation can happen inside your body without you even knowing, and it might not be a good thing if it goes on for too long.

This study is trying to understand if eating Huel, which is a type of complete meal in a drink or food, can affect these internal irritation levels. The researchers will look at a group of healthy people and measure certain signs in their bodies that tell us about inflammation, especially in their gut. They want to see if these signs change after people have been regularly eating Huel for a few weeks.

The main idea is to observe if Huel has an impact on these specific inflammation markers. It's like checking a few different dials on a machine to see if they move up or down when you change something in the machine. This could give us clues about how Huel might affect your body's internal balance and overall health.

Key takeaways

  • This study evaluates Huel's effect on body inflammation markers.
  • It involves healthy adults consuming Huel daily for four weeks.
  • Inflammation levels are checked before, during, and after the Huel period.
  • The findings could inform how Huel impacts internal body processes.
  • Participation lasts about five weeks in total.

Who may be eligible?

To join this study, you need to be a generally healthy adult, aged 18 or older. It's important that you are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or a smoker. Also, you shouldn't have any food allergies or any eating disorders.

The study cannot include you if your Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 30, which is a measure of your weight compared to your height. You also can't take part if you have a medical condition or are on any medicines that might affect the study results. The researchers want to make sure that any changes they see are due to the Huel and not other factors.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you 18 years old or older?
  2. Are you generally healthy?
  3. Are you definitely not pregnant or breastfeeding?
  4. Do you not smoke?
  5. Do you not have any food allergies or eating disorders?
  6. Is your Body Mass Index (BMI) not over 30 and you don't have any major medical conditions?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you join this study, your journey will last about five weeks in total. At the very beginning, and then again after one week, and finally after four weeks, the research team will check your inflammation levels. In between these checks, for four weeks, you will be asked to eat two Huel ready-to-eat products every day. This will be one Hot & Savoury Huel (only the grain-based option) and any remaining calories you need will be made up with Huel Powder (v3.1). You will continue to eat your regular diet alongside these Huel products. There are no specific visits mentioned, so it's likely you'll be given instructions and supplies to manage this at home, with check-ins for the measurements.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in this study might offer you the chance to understand more about your own body's inflammation markers, although the primary goal is research. There are no known direct health benefits for participants, but the information gained could be helpful for future understanding of diet and inflammation. As with any diet change, there's a small chance you might experience minor stomach upsets while adjusting to the Huel products, though these are generally considered safe. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your medical care.

Inflammation is your body's natural response to protect itself, like when you have a cut. It can also happen inside your body and may be related to your general health.

What is Huel?

Huel is a type of complete meal in various forms, like powders or ready-to-eat pots, designed to provide balanced nutrition.

How long will the study last?

The study will last for about five weeks in total, including the initial checks and the four weeks of eating Huel.

Do I have to stop eating my regular food?

No, you will continue to eat your regular diet, but you will also include specific Huel products each day for four weeks.

Will I know my own results?

The study aims to understand inflammation in the group as a whole. You should ask the research team if individual results will be shared.
