Compuls-BED-Severity

This study aims to better understand Binge Eating Disorder (BED), a condition where people regularly eat large amounts of food and feel a loss of control. Doctors are still learning about how to best classify the severity of BED. We want to see if different levels of BED severity are linked to other health problems, such as metabolic issues, especially in people who are also obese. The researchers believe that by looking closely at things like impulsivity (acting without thinking), emotional control, attention, and other health conditions, they can create a better way to tell the difference between mild and severe forms of BED. Ultimately, this understanding could lead to improved ways of identifying and treating BED, helping more people get the right care.

What is this study about?

This research study, called "Compuls-BED-Severity," is focused on Binge Eating Disorder (BED). BED is a complex eating disorder where individuals experience recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food, often very quickly, and feel unable to stop. This condition has only recently been officially recognised as a distinct disorder, and doctors are still working to understand its different forms and how severe it can be. This study aims to help define what makes BED severe and how that might affect a person's overall health, particularly if they also live with obesity.

The main goal is to figure out if there are specific signs or symptoms that can clearly separate a milder form of BED from a more severe one. For example, the study will look at how much a person acts on impulse, how well they manage their emotions, if they have trouble paying attention, and if they have any other physical or mental health problems. The researchers believe that by understanding these different aspects, they can develop a better way to categorise BED severity.

Why is this important? If doctors have a clearer way to measure the severity of BED, they can better understand each person's needs. This could lead to more tailored and effective treatment plans, making it easier to diagnose the condition and provide the most appropriate support and care for people experiencing Binge Eating Disorder.

Key takeaways

  • This study aims to better understand Binge Eating Disorder (BED) severity.
  • It could lead to improved ways of diagnosing and treating BED in the future.
  • Participation involves answering questionnaires and assessments, not new treatments.
  • They are looking for both people with and without BED.
  • The study focuses on how things like impulsivity and emotions relate to BED severity.
  • You must be fluent in French to participate.

Who may be eligible?

To join this study, participants should be men or women between 18 and 65 years old. You might be suitable if you are considering weight-loss surgery (have a BMI over 40, or over 35 with other serious health issues), or if you are attending the IUCPQ Obesity Clinic for weight management and have a BMI of 30 or higher. Individuals receiving treatment for Binge Eating Disorder at CEPIA with a BMI of 30 or higher are also invited.

We are looking for two main groups: people who screen positive for Binge Eating Disorder and people who do not have Binge Eating Disorder (the control group). All participants must be able to understand and speak French fluently and be able to give their consent to participate.

However, you cannot take part if you have a severe brain condition, a major memory issue, or have had weight-loss surgery before. You also cannot join if you've recently started or changed certain weight-loss medications (like liraglutide or naltrexone/bupropion) in the last three months. You also need to be able to use a computer or iPad and have internet access, or be able to visit one of the study locations.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you between 18 and 65 years old?
  2. Are you able to speak and understand French fluently?
  3. Are you considering weight-loss surgery or receiving treatment for obesity or BED?
  4. Do you have access to the internet and can use a computer or iPad?
  5. Have you NOT had weight-loss surgery before?
  6. Have you NOT started or changed certain weight-loss medications in the last 3 months?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

This is an observational study, which means you won't be given any new medications or treatments specifically for this research. Instead, the researchers will gather information about your health through questionnaires, assessments, and possibly some tests. You will be asked questions about your eating habits, feelings, and general health. You may also be asked to complete some tasks on a computer or iPad to look at things like attention and impulsivity. The study aims to look at your individual experience with Binge Eating Disorder or your general health if you are in the control group. The total duration of your participation is not specified, but it involves several assessments.

Potential risks and benefits

Participating in this study involves very minimal risks, mainly the time commitment and potential discomfort from answering personal questions. There are no known physical risks as it is an observational study and no new treatments are being given. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your medical care. The potential benefits include contributing to a better understanding of Binge Eating Disorder, which could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment for others in the future. You may also gain a clearer understanding of your own health from participating in the assessments.

Common questions

What is Binge Eating Disorder (BED)?

BED is an eating disorder where people regularly eat very large amounts of food, often quickly and to the point of feeling uncomfortably full, and feel a loss of control during these episodes.

Will I receive new treatment in this study?

No, this is an observational study, meaning you won't be given any new specific treatments or medications as part of the research.

Who can join this study?

Men and women aged 18 to 65 who are fluent in French and fit criteria related to obesity or Binge Eating Disorder may be eligible.

What does 'observational' mean?

It means researchers will collect information about your current health, habits, and feelings through questionnaires and assessments, without directly changing your treatment or healthcare.

Do I need to have Binge Eating Disorder to participate?

No, the study includes both people with Binge Eating Disorder and a 'control group' of people without it, to compare information.
