A Novel Ureteric Stent in Kidney Stone Patients and Oncology Patients Compared to a Conventional JJ Stent
This research is looking at a new kind of tube, called a ureteric stent, for people who have kidney stones or cancer that might block the tubes connecting their kidneys to their bladder. Often, the usual stents can cause pain and infections, which can really affect someone's quality of life. The new stent has a special design to try and stop these problems from happening. If successful, this new stent could mean fewer hospital visits, less pain, and fewer infections for patients. This is important because it could help people live more comfortably and stay independent, especially older people, and reduce the need for antibiotics, which is good for everyone's health.
At a glance
What is this study about?
When you have problems like kidney stones or certain cancers, a small tube called a ureteric stent is sometimes put in to help urine flow properly from your kidney to your bladder. While these stents are very helpful, they can also cause problems like pain, discomfort, and infections in the urinary tract. Feeling unwell and needing antibiotics can really affect how you feel day-to-day and your mental well-being.
This study is looking at a new type of ureteric stent that has a special design. The aim is for this new design to reduce the common problems linked to stents, particularly infections and discomfort. By making these stents better, we hope to improve the quality of life for people who need them and cut down on the number of times they might need to go to the hospital because of stent-related issues. This could mean more independence, especially for older patients.
Ultimately, if this new stent works well, it could significantly improve how people manage their condition. Fewer infections would also mean less need for antibiotics, which is a positive step in the global effort to slow down antibiotic resistance. The research team wants to see if this new design can make a real difference to patients' health and hospital burden.
Key takeaways
- This study is testing a new stent designed to reduce pain and infections.
- It's for people who need a ureteric stent due to kidney stones or cancer.
- The goal is to improve quality of life and reduce hospital visits.
- Taking part involves receiving the new stent and sharing your experiences.
- The new design aims to reduce the need for antibiotics in the long run.
Who may be eligible?
To be considered for this study, you need to be at least 18 years old. You should have a medical need for a ureteric stent, either because of kidney stones or cancer that is affecting the tubes from your kidneys. It's also helpful if you've had a ureteric stent before, as this helps us understand your experience.
You must be waiting to have a new stent put in or have your current one replaced. It's important that you are able to understand what the study involves and agree to take part (this is called giving consent). You also need to be well enough to have the stent procedure and be able to complete study documents and questionnaires in English.
There are some reasons why you might not be able to join. For example, if your doctors believe you may not live for at least another four months, or if you are pregnant, you wouldn't be able to take part. Also if you are considered unfit for the stent procedure or unable to follow the study instructions, you wouldn't be eligible.
Could this study suit you?
Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.
- Are you 18 years old or older?
- Do you need a ureteric stent because of kidney stones or cancer?
- Have you had a ureteric stent before?
- Are you waiting for a stent to be put in or replaced soon?
- Can you understand information about the study and complete questionnaires in English?
What does participation involve?
If you decide to take part in this study, you would receive the new experimental ureteric stent instead of a standard one. You would be asked questions about your experience with the stent, for example, about pain or discomfort, and how it affects your daily life. This would likely involve talking to a researcher in an interview. The study aims to follow how you get on with the new stent, but the total duration isn't specified here.

Common questions
What is a ureteric stent?
It's a small, thin tube placed in the ureter (the tube connecting your kidney to your bladder) to help urine flow if it's blocked, for example, by kidney stones or a tumour.
Why is this new stent different?
It has a special design with unique side-holes to try and stop bacteria and particles from building up, which often causes pain and infections with standard stents.
Will I still need a stent if I join the study?
Yes, you would already have a medical reason to need a stent, and this study involves using a new type of stent instead of the usual one.
What kind of questions will I be asked?
You'll be asked about your experience with the stent, including any pain, how it affects your daily life, and any infections you might have. This will be done through interviews or questionnaires.
Will the study affect my usual healthcare?
No, your decision to join or leave the study will not affect the standard medical care you receive for your condition.
