Food Supplement for Longevity
As we age, our cells can become less efficient at producing energy and repairing themselves. This study wants to find out if a daily food supplement, called Thrive⁺, can help support healthy ageing. Thrive⁺ contains ingredients like those that boost NAD⁺ (important for energy) and Coenzyme Q10, which helps cells produce energy, along with resveratrol. We're looking for 15 healthy volunteers, aged 35 and over, to take one capsule a day for one month. Participants will visit The Functional Gut Clinic in Manchester twice for blood tests, blood pressure checks, and simple health assessments. The main goal is to see if the supplement increases NAD⁺ levels in the blood and improves other markers of cellular health.
At a glance
What is this study about?
As we get older, the tiny parts of our body called cells start to slow down. They don't make energy as well as they used to, and they struggle to fix themselves when they get damaged. This natural process is sometimes called 'cellular ageing'. It's linked to lower levels of something vital inside our cells called NAD⁺, which is super important for producing energy and keeping our cells healthy. Other things also play a part, like our body's ability to fight off damage and how well the 'powerhouses' of our cells, called mitochondria, work.
This study wants to explore if taking a special food supplement each day for just one month can help improve how our cells are working in adults aged 35 and over. The supplement, called Thrive⁺, has ingredients that might help our bodies produce energy better and protect cells from damage. It includes compounds designed to boost those important NAD⁺ levels, as well as Coenzyme Q10 (often called CoQ10), which is also key for cell energy production. It also contains resveratrol, a natural plant compound that some believe supports healthy ageing.
We're hoping to understand whether this supplement can make a real difference to these important markers of cellular health. By looking at various measurements before and after taking the supplement, we aim to gain insights into whether products like Thrive⁺ could play a role in supporting healthy ageing for people in their everyday lives.
Key takeaways
- This study investigates a daily food supplement (Thrive⁺) for healthy ageing.
- It aims to boost cell energy and repair by increasing NAD⁺ levels.
- Participation involves two clinic visits over one month.
- Blood tests, blood pressure, and questionnaires will be part of the assessments.
- The study seeks healthy adults aged 35+ who are not on regular medication.
- Results could help us understand future approaches to healthy ageing.
Who may be eligible?
To join this study, we're looking for healthy men and women aged 35 or older. You should not be taking any regular prescription medications and should generally be in good health. Your weight should be within a healthy range, generally not too underweight or significantly overweight (your BMI should be between 18.5 and 39.9).
It's important that you haven't taken any other nutritional supplements that might affect the study results in the last three months. You also need to be willing to keep your diet fairly stable during the study and limit how much fortified food (foods with added vitamins and minerals) you eat to less than five portions a week. If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you'll need to agree to use effective birth control methods throughout the study, such as the pill, an implant, an IUD, or having a partner with a vasectomy.
Unfortunately, you can't take part if you're currently pregnant or breastfeeding, have a serious medical condition, have recently participated in another research trial (within the last 28 days), or have a history of drug or excessive alcohol use. If you have any medical condition that requires regular medication or if the study team thinks the study wouldn't be safe or provide clear results for you, then you wouldn't be able to join.
Could this study suit you?
Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.
- Are you generally healthy and not taking regular prescription medications?
- Are you 35 years old or older?
- Have you avoided other nutritional supplements (except standard multi-vitamins) in the last 3 months?
- Are you willing to maintain a stable diet and limit fortified foods for a month?
- Do you have a BMI between 18.5 and 39.9?
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, are you using effective contraception?
What does participation involve?
If you decide to take part, you'll be one of 15 healthy volunteers. The study lasts for one month, and you'll take one Thrive⁺ capsule every day during this time. You'll need to visit The Functional Gut Clinic in Manchester twice. The first visit will be at the very beginning of the study, and the second visit will be after you've taken the supplement for 30 days.
At both clinic visits, we'll do several assessments. This will include having blood tests, checking your blood pressure and heart rhythm, and a simple test to measure your grip strength. You'll also be asked to fill out some short questionnaires about how you're feeling and your general wellbeing. If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you will also have a pregnancy test at these visits. The total time you'll be actively involved in the study, from your first visit to your last, will be about 30 days.

Common questions
What is NAD⁺ and why is it important?
NAD⁺ is a crucial molecule in your body that helps your cells make energy and repair themselves. It's thought to decrease as we get older.
Who is running this study?
This study is being conducted at The Functional Gut Clinic in Manchester.
What kind of supplement is Thrive⁺?
Thrive⁺ is a daily food supplement containing ingredients like NAD⁺ boosters, Coenzyme Q10, and resveratrol, which are thought to support cellular health and energy.
How long will I need to take the supplement?
You will take one Thrive⁺ capsule per day for 30 days.
Will I know my own test results?
The study's primary focus is on overall research outcomes. You can discuss with the study team whether individual results will be shared.
