EasiVits Acceptability & Tolerance Study

This study is testing new vitamin and mineral supplements called EasiVits for children aged 1 to 16 who have inherited problems with their metabolism. These conditions often need special diets that can make it hard for children to get all the vitamins and minerals they need. Currently available supplements have some limitations, like too much sugar or only one flavour, which can make them difficult for children to stick with. EasiVits are designed to be low in sugar and don't have a flavour, so they can be mixed with allowed drinks. We want to find out if children find these new supplements more acceptable and easier to take, helping to ensure they get the important nutrients their bodies need for healthy growth and development.

What is this study about?

When children are born with certain inherited conditions, their bodies have trouble breaking down food properly. These are called Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEMs). To keep them healthy, doctors often suggest special diets that limit certain things like protein, fat, or sugar. While these diets are very important for managing their condition, they can sometimes mean children miss out on essential vitamins and minerals.

Currently, there are vitamin and mineral supplements available on prescription, but they don't always work perfectly for every child. For example, some have added sugar, which isn't suitable for children on sugar-restricted diets. Others might only come in one flavour, and after a while, children might get tired of it, making them less likely to take their medicine regularly. This means that even with supplements, children might not be getting all the nutrients they need.

The EasiVits study is looking at two new vitamin and mineral supplements that could offer a better solution. Called UNO EasiVits and DUO EasiVits, these new supplements are designed to have very little sugar and no flavour. This is great because it means children on very strict, low-sugar diets can still take them, and parents can mix the supplements with drinks their child enjoys, as long as they are allowed as part of their diet. The main goal is to see if these new EasiVits are easier for children to take and if they are a better fit for their individual needs.

Key takeaways

  • Tests new vitamin and mineral supplements (EasiVits) for children with inherited metabolic conditions.
  • Aims to check how acceptable and easy to take these new, sugar-free, unflavoured supplements are.
  • Could help ensure children get essential nutrients despite strict diets.
  • Open to children aged 1-16 who are already taking supplements.
  • Involves trying the new supplement for 7 days.
  • Your participation helps improve options for other children.

Who may be eligible?

This study is looking for boys and girls aged between 1 and 16 years old who have been diagnosed with an inherited metabolism condition. To take part, you should already be taking vitamin and mineral supplements for your condition and be willing to try the new supplements for one week. It's important that you are generally healthy, apart from your metabolism condition, and that you usually stick to your diet plan and take your current supplements as prescribed. You also need to be able to understand what the study involves and agree to take part, or have your parents agree for you if you're under 16.

However, this study isn't suitable for everyone. Children under 1 year old cannot take part, nor can anyone who has other serious health problems besides their metabolism condition. If you have any moderate to severe recent illness that a doctor thinks might interfere with the study, you also wouldn't be able to join. Lastly, if you tend to have difficulty following diet plans or taking medicines, or if you're currently in another medical study, this one wouldn't be right for you.

Quick self-check
  • Are you between 1 and 16 years old?
  • Do you have an inherited metabolism condition?
  • Do you currently take vitamin and mineral supplements for your condition?
  • Are you generally healthy, except for your metabolism condition?
  • Are you able to follow a diet plan and take your medicines regularly?
  • Are you willing to try a new supplement for one week?

This is a guide only — the research team will confirm whether you can take part.

What does participation involve?

If you agree to join the study, you would be asked to try the new EasiVits supplements for 7 days. During this time, you would continue to manage your diet and medication as usual, just replacing your current vitamin and mineral supplement with the EasiVits. The study team would explain exactly how to take them. Before you start and after the 7 days, you would have a visit where the team would check how you are doing and ask questions about how you found the EasiVits. The whole study would only last for a short period, mainly focused on that one week of trying the new supplement, followed by a final check-up.

Potential risks and benefits

By taking part, you could be helping researchers understand if these new EasiVits supplements are a better option for children with inherited metabolism conditions, potentially leading to better nutrient intake for many children in the future. While the EasiVits are new, they contain standard vitamins and minerals found in other supplements, so serious risks are not expected. However, as with any new supplement, there's always a small chance of unexpected side effects or that you might not like the taste or feel of them. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your usual care.

Common questions

What are EasiVits?

EasiVits are new vitamin and mineral supplements designed for children with inherited metabolism conditions. They have very little sugar and no flavour.

Why are new supplements needed?

Existing supplements can have too much sugar or only one flavour, making them hard for some children to take regularly, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies.

Who can take part in this study?

Children aged 1 to 16 who have an inherited metabolism condition, are already on supplements, and are generally healthy apart from their main condition.

How long will I be in the study?

You would take the new EasiVits for 7 days, with visits before and after this period. The overall study time is short.

Can I choose my own flavour?

Yes, EasiVits are unflavoured so you can mix them with your preferred permitted drink or cordial.
