Evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of PNMR as Treatment for Long COVID

This research is investigating a new treatment called Paragon Novel Metabolic Regulator (PNMR) for people with Long COVID. We aim to find out if PNMR, when combined with standard medical care and special dietary and lifestyle advice, can help improve symptoms. For six weeks, some patients will receive PNMR plus standard care, while others will have standard care only. All participants will also get advice on diet and lifestyle to support their immune system. We believe that Long COVID might be linked to a lack of certain important nutrients, and PNMR could help put these back. Patients will have check-ups at the clinic and over the phone, and they'll keep a diary to track their progress.

What is this study about?

Long COVID can cause many different symptoms that last for a long time after the initial coronavirus infection. Scientists believe that a healthy and strong immune system is key to fighting off illnesses, clearing up damaged tissues, and helping the body heal and get back to normal. However, for some reason, about half of people with Long COVID don't seem to recover fully on their own.

Recent research suggests that people with Long COVID might be missing certain vital nutrients, often called 'metabolites,' that are essential for their immune system and energy production (which happens in tiny parts of our cells called mitochondria) to work properly. Without enough of these important building blocks, the body might struggle to fight off the illness and heal completely. Many things, like serious illness, pollution, stress, poor diet, and even lack of sleep, can reduce these important nutrient levels in our bodies.

This study wants to explore if giving people with Long COVID a new treatment called PNMR can help restore these missing nutrients. We believe that by replenishing these key metabolites, PNMR could help kick-start the body's natural healing processes, allowing the immune system and energy production systems to function better. This could lead to a reduction in the wide range of symptoms experienced by people with Long COVID.

Key takeaways

  • This study explores a new treatment (PNMR) for Long COVID.
  • It aims to boost the body's natural healing and immune system.
  • Participation involves 6 weeks of treatment/care, plus follow-up.
  • You'll get diet and lifestyle advice for immune support.
  • All participants will keep a daily diary and have clinic visits.
  • You can withdraw from the study at any time.

Who may be eligible?

To join this study, you must be at least 19 years old. You need to have had a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis more than four weeks ago, and a negative COVID-19 test at least four weeks before starting the study. Importantly, you must have a Long COVID diagnosis, meaning you've had symptoms for at least three months after your initial infection, and these symptoms have lasted for more than two months without another clear explanation.

There are also a few practical things you'll need to agree to. If you're a woman who could get pregnant, you'll need to have a negative pregnancy test and agree to use birth control during the study. You'll also need to stop taking any over-the-counter supplements or certain medications that might affect the study results. You should be willing to follow the diet and exercise advice given, and complete questionnaires and a daily diary.

Unfortunately, you can't join if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant. The study also cannot include anyone who is taking certain medications that could interfere with the study's aims, especially those related to tiredness or thinking ability. Everyone who joins must give their permission by signing a consent form.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you 19 years old or older?
  2. Have you had Long COVID symptoms for at least 3 months?
  3. Is it at least 4 weeks since your last positive COVID-19 test, and you currently test negative?
  4. Are you willing to stop taking most other supplements and specific medications during the study?
  5. Are you able to follow diet and exercise advice and keep a diary?
  6. Are you not pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you join this study, it will last for six weeks, plus a follow-up period. You'll be randomly put into one of two groups: one group will receive the new treatment (PNMR) plus standard care, and the other group will receive standard care only. Everyone in the study will also get special advice on diet and lifestyle to support their health. You'll know which group you are in.

You'll need to visit the clinic at the start, at 3 weeks, and at 6 weeks. There will also be a follow-up phone call about 4 weeks after your treatment ends. At the clinic visits, assessments will be done, and you'll need to fill in questionnaires. You'll also be asked to keep a daily diary to record how you're feeling and if you're taking the study treatment.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in a study like this might offer some potential benefits, such as receiving a new treatment and expert advice on diet and lifestyle that could improve your Long COVID symptoms. However, as this is a new treatment, there might be unknown side effects or it might not work for everyone. As with any medical study, there's always a chance of risks or discomfort from clinic visits or assessments. You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your usual medical care.

Common questions

What is PNMR?

PNMR stands for Paragon Novel Metabolic Regulator. It's a new treatment designed to help boost your body's natural healing systems by providing key nutrients it might be missing.

Will I know if I'm getting PNMR or just standard care?

Yes, this study is 'open-label,' meaning both you and the study team will know whether you are receiving PNMR plus standard care or standard care by itself.

What kind of lifestyle and diet advice will I get?

The advice will be specifically designed to help improve your immune system's function and help your body deal with any remaining virus.

How long will the study actually last for me?

The treatment part of the study is six weeks, and there'll be a follow-up phone call about a month after that. So, in total, it will be around 10 weeks.

What if I get pregnant during the study?

If you become pregnant, you must stop taking the study products immediately and let the study doctor know right away.
