EMPATHY NSCLC: European Registry for Plasma-Based Molecular Profiling in Advanced NSCLC Patients

This study, called EMPATHY NSCLC, collects information from people receiving treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Researchers want to understand how different tests on blood (plasma) and tissue samples help doctors choose the best treatments. They will gather details on the treatments given, how effective they are, and how patients feel throughout their journey. The main goal is to learn more about the everyday use of these tests in cancer care, how treatment decisions are made based on the results, and what outcomes patients experience. This will help improve care for people with lung cancer in the future.

What is this study about?

This study is called EMPATHY NSCLC, and it’s for people who have advanced non-small cell lung cancer (a common type of lung cancer). When cancer is advanced, it means it has spread locally or to other parts of the body.

Doctors often use special tests on tiny samples of blood or tissue from the cancer to understand it better. These tests can help them choose the most suitable treatments. This study aims to gather real-world information about how these tests are used in everyday medical care across Europe. It will collect details about the treatments patients receive after these tests, how well those treatments work, and how patients themselves feel about their health and quality of life.

By collecting all this information, researchers hope to get a clearer picture of how these tests influence treatment decisions and what the long-term results are for patients. This knowledge can help doctors make even better choices for future patients with advanced lung cancer.

Key takeaways

  • This study helps understand treatments for advanced lung cancer.
  • It collects information from routine medical care.
  • No new treatments are given in this study.
  • Your health data helps improve future patient care.
  • Your participation is voluntary and confidential.

Who may be eligible?

To join this study, you need to have advanced non-small cell lung cancer that doctors cannot remove with surgery. You must not have received any treatment for this advanced stage of your cancer yet, and your doctor must be planning to start your first treatment for it soon.

Your general health and how well you can do daily activities, as assessed by your doctor, should be at a level where you can participate. You also need to be at least 18 years old and able to understand and sign a consent form.

You would not be able to join if you have had another type of cancer (other than skin cancer that isn't melanoma, or early non-invasive cervical cancer) within the last five years.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Do I have advanced non-small cell lung cancer?
  2. Have I started treatment for this advanced cancer yet? (You shouldn't have served as per eligibility criteria)
  3. Am I at least 18 years old?
  4. Am I generally well enough for standard cancer treatment?
  5. Do I have any other major cancers diagnosed in the last 5 years?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

This study is a 'registry,' which means it primarily collects information that doctors would gather as part of your regular care. There are no special treatments or medications given by the study itself. You won't have extra visits just for the study. Instead, researchers will collect information from your existing medical records, including details about your cancer, the molecular tests done (on blood or tissue), the treatments you receive, how well they work, and some information about how you feel (patient-reported outcomes) over time. The total duration of your participation would depend on how long your doctor continues to treat and monitor your advanced lung cancer, as the study aims to follow your journey.

Potential risks and benefits

There are no direct medical benefits or risks from taking part in this particular study, as it only involves collecting information from your routine care rather than giving new treatments. However, your participation will help doctors and researchers understand more about how advanced lung cancer is treated today and how different tests help guide treatment choices. This knowledge can benefit future patients. You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without it affecting your medical care.

Common questions

What is 'molecular profiling'?

It's a special test on your cancer cells or blood to find specific changes or markers that can help doctors choose the best treatment for you.

Do I get a new treatment in this study?

No, this study doesn't involve new treatments. It's about collecting information on tests and treatments you would get as part of your usual care.

What does 'patient-reported outcomes' mean?

This refers to information gathered directly from you about how you feel, your symptoms, and your quality of life during your treatment.

Will my personal details be kept private?

Yes, all the information collected for the study will be handled carefully and your personal details will be kept confidential.

Who is running this study?

This is a European study looking at real-world practice in advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients.
