What is this study about?

When people need a pacemaker, it's usually because their heart's natural electrical system isn't working properly, causing their heart to beat too slowly or irregularly. The traditional way to put in a pacemaker involves placing a small wire, called a lead, through one of the heart's valves, into the lower right chamber.

While effective, this method can sometimes cause problems. The wire passing through the valve might affect how the valve works over time, or the way the pacemaker stimulates the heart might slightly weaken its pumping ability. Scientists are always looking for better ways to do things, and new types of pacemakers have been developed to try and avoid these issues.

This study is looking at two of these newer types: one called a 'leadless pacemaker,' which is a tiny device placed directly inside the heart without any wires, and another called 'left bundle branch area pacing.' Who may be eligible?

To be able to join this study, you would need to be at least 18 years old and already scheduled to have a permanent pacemaker fitted at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. This is typically for conditions where your heart beats too slowly or irregularly, such as a severe type of heart block.

There are certain reasons why you wouldn't be able to take part. For example, if your heart's main pumping chamber is already weak, or if you have severe problems with your tricuspid valve, or if you've had certain heart surgeries in the past. Also, if you're pregnant, have a very short life expectancy, or have kidney problems, you wouldn't be eligible.

What does participation involve?

If you agree to take part, you will have the study procedures at the same time as your routine pacemaker implantation. This means everything happens during one visit, while you are already under general anaesthetic for your planned surgery. There are no extra hospital visits required for the study itself.
