Benefit of Bovine or Marine Collagen Vs. Placebo on Skin, Hair, Nails and Whole Body Health in Healthy Adults

We're running a study called BECOME to see if collagen supplements can improve skin, hair, nails, and overall health in healthy women aged 35-55. Participants will be given either collagen from cows, collagen from fish, or a dummy pill (placebo). We'll then compare the effects to work out if collagen makes a difference and if one type is better than another. We'll be checking various health markers, like skin firmness, gut health, and general well-being over a set time. This research aims to understand if these popular supplements truly help and for whom.

What is this study about?

This research study, called BECOME, is designed to understand if taking collagen supplements can help improve your skin, hair, nails, and general health. We know that collagen is a popular supplement, and many people wonder if it really works. This study will help us find out.

We'll be comparing two main types of collagen: one that comes from cows (bovine collagen) and another that comes from fish (marine collagen). We'll also compare these to a 'dummy pill' or placebo, which looks just like the real thing but has no active ingredients. This helps us ensure that any changes we see are truly due to the collagen and not just because someone expects to feel better.

Throughout the study, we'll carefully measure different aspects of your health. This includes looking at how firm your skin is, the condition of your hair and nails, your joint comfort, how well your digestive system is working, and your overall sense of well-being. Our goal is to see if collagen supplements really make a difference and, if so, whether there's a particular type of collagen that is more effective for these health benefits.

Key takeaways

  • This study evaluates collagen supplements for skin, hair, nails, and overall health.
  • It compares bovine and marine collagen against a dummy pill in healthy women.
  • Participants will be aged between 35 and 55 years old.
  • Measurements will include skin firmness, hair condition, nail health, and overall well-being.
  • Your participation helps us understand if collagen supplements truly work.
  • You won't know if you're taking collagen or a dummy pill until the study ends.

Who may be eligible?

This study is looking for women between 35 and 55 years old who are generally healthy. It's important that you are comfortable taking supplements made from cows or fish, as this study is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

There are certain reasons why you might not be able to take part. For example, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have ongoing skin problems like eczema or psoriasis. If you've had cosmetic treatments like Botox, fillers, or laser treatment in the last three months, or if you're currently taking collagen supplements, this study wouldn't be right for you. We also can't include people who smoke, drink a lot of alcohol, or use sunbeds regularly.

We also need to make sure you're not taking any medicines or using skin creams that could affect your skin, hair, nails, or digestion. Our main goal is to ensure the study is safe for everyone and that we can get clear results about how the collagen works.

Quick self-check
  • Are you a woman aged between 35 and 55?
  • Are you comfortable with supplements from cow or fish sources (not vegetarian/vegan)?
  • Are you currently pregnant or breastfeeding? (If yes, you can't join)
  • Do you have chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis? (If yes, you can't join)
  • Have you had recent cosmetic treatments (Botox, fillers, lasers) in the last 3 months? (If yes, you can't join)
  • Are you a smoker or a regular sunbed user? (If yes, you can't join)

This is a guide only — the research team will confirm whether you can take part.

What does participation involve?

The study involves taking either a collagen supplement (from cows or marine sources) or a dummy pill daily for a set period. You won't know which one you're taking. You'll need to attend several appointments for assessments, where we'll check your skin, hair, nails, and overall health. This will involve physical examinations and possibly answering questionnaires about your well-being and lifestyle. We will provide detailed instructions about taking the supplement and any activities to avoid during the study. The total duration of your participation will be explained to you before you agree to join.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in this study may offer potential benefits, such as improvements in your skin, hair, nails, or overall well-being, especially if you receive active collagen. However, there's always a chance you might receive the dummy pill and experience no such benefits. As with any supplement, there could be side effects, though collagen is generally considered safe. These will be fully explained before you decide to join. Remember, your participation is completely voluntary, and you are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your medical care.

Common questions

What is collagen?

Collagen is a natural protein found in your body, providing strength and structure to your skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. As we get older, our bodies produce less of it.

Why can't vegetarians or vegans join?

The collagen supplements used in this study come from animal sources (cows and fish), which are not suitable for vegetarian or vegan diets.

Will I know if I'm getting collagen or a dummy pill?

No, this is a 'blinded' study, meaning neither you nor the study team will know whether you are taking collagen or the dummy pill until the study is over. This helps ensure fair results.

What kind of tests will I have?

You'll have various assessments involving examinations of your skin, hair, and nails. You might also fill out questionnaires about how you feel and your general health.

What if I feel unwell during the study?

If you feel unwell or have any concerns during the study, you should contact the study team immediately. They are there to help and support you.
