Assessment of HPHC Exposure in Smokers Switching to THS/TP18 With Different Device Variants
This study aims to understand how switching from traditional cigarettes to new heated tobacco products (called THS and TP18) affects the levels of certain harmful chemicals in a smoker's body. We're comparing adults who switch to these new products with those who continue smoking their regular cigarettes. The study will involve groups using different versions of the heated tobacco devices. Participants will stay at a research centre for five days, using their assigned product, and then have two days of special testing. Afterwards, they'll go home and continue using their product for a longer period. The main goal is to see if these new devices might reduce the body's exposure to some of the harmful substances found in cigarette smoke.

What is this study about?
This research study is looking into new types of heated tobacco products, which are called THS and TP18. You might have heard of similar products that heat tobacco instead of burning it. The main idea behind this study is to compare these heated tobacco devices with traditional cigarettes.
We want to see if people who switch from smoking regular cigarettes to using these heated tobacco products have lower levels of certain harmful chemicals in their bodies. These chemicals are usually present when someone smokes. The study will involve different versions of the new heated tobacco device to check if there are any differences between them. We'll also compare these results to people who continue to smoke their usual cigarettes.
The information we gather from this study will help us understand more about how heated tobacco products affect the body compared to smoking regular cigarettes. This kind of research is important for learning more about new tobacco products as they become available.
Key takeaways
- This study compares heated tobacco products to traditional cigarettes.
- It aims to see if heated tobacco products reduce harmful chemicals in the body.
- Participants will either switch to heated tobacco or continue smoking cigarettes.
- The study involves a 5-day stay at a research centre, followed by home use.
- You must be an adult smoker aged 21-65 to be considered.
- This research helps us understand new tobacco products better.
Who may be eligible?
This study is looking for both men and women who are between 21 and 65 years old. To take part, you must have been a smoker for at least two years and currently smoke at least 10 regular cigarettes a day. You also need to be willing to switch to using the heated tobacco products for the study, and not plan to quit smoking in the next three months.
There are also some health checks. You shouldn't have any serious health conditions that need ongoing medical treatment or might interfere with the study. If you've been unwell recently with a high temperature or an infection, you might need to wait before joining. The study team will do some health tests, like checking your heart and lungs, to make sure it's safe for you to participate.
Importantly, you need to be available for the entire study period and willing to follow all the instructions, including using the assigned products and, for certain periods, sticking to a special diet.
Could this study suit you?
Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.
- Are you between 21 and 65 years old?
- Have you smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day for the last two years?
- Are you willing to switch to a heated tobacco product during the study, or continue your current smoking?
- Are you able to stay at a research centre for five days?
- Do you have any serious ongoing health conditions or recent illnesses?
- Do you not plan to quit smoking in the next three months?
What does participation involve?
If you join this study, you'll be assigned to one of six groups, either using a heated tobacco product (one of several versions) or continuing to smoke your usual cigarettes. For the first five days, you'll stay at a research centre, using only your assigned product. This is called the 'confinement period'.
After this, for two days, there will be special testing where you might use different products in a set order. If you're in the group that only smokes regular cigarettes, you won't do this part. Following these days, you'll go home and continue using your assigned product as usual. If you were assigned a heated tobacco product, you'll be able to choose which version to use during this period. Throughout the study, you'll have to attend follow-up appointments and, at certain times, follow a special diet, especially during the confinement period and during overnight stays later in the study. The total duration of the study will involve these different stages.
