Vision and hearing impairment in care homes in the UK- the UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study

This study, called the UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study, wants to find out how many people in care homes across the UK have problems with their vision and hearing. We don't currently have this information, so the study will involve eye and hearing checks for residents in selected care homes. The researchers also want to understand why these problems sometimes go unnoticed and what care home staff know about them. The aim is to help prevent or treat these issues and improve residents' quality of life. Participants will receive a free eye and ear check, and any immediate problems like earwax will be helped.

What is this study about?

This study, called the UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study, is all about understanding vision and hearing in care homes across the UK. Currently, we don't know exactly how many care home residents have sight or hearing problems. This research wants to find out by checking the eyes and ears of residents in some care homes. The main goals are to learn how many residents have these sensory issues, and if these issues could be prevented or treated to make their lives better.

The study also aims to understand why these problems might sometimes be missed in care homes. They will talk to care home staff to see what they know about residents' sensory needs and what information is kept in their records. By gathering all this information, the study hopes to highlight the importance of good eye and ear care for care home residents and suggest ways to improve this care.

Taking part would mean having an eye and hearing check, similar to what you might have at a high-street optician, plus answering some questions about your health and daily life. If problems are found, such as earwax blockages, the research team can help on the spot. If more serious issues are detected, they will recommend you see your own doctor or go to a hospital specialist.

Key takeaways

  • The study aims to understand vision and hearing problems in UK care homes.
  • Participants receive free eye and hearing checks.
  • If earwax is found to be impacting hearing, it can be removed free of charge.
  • The study helps identify undetected sensory issues in care homes.
  • Findings will help improve care for residents with sight and hearing difficulties.
  • Participants receive a £20 gift voucher as a thank you.

Who may be eligible?

This study is looking for care home residents who are 50 years old or older.

If someone joining the study can't make their own decisions about taking part, they will need a family member or someone close to them (called a 'consultee') to give permission on their behalf. The consultee needs to be willing to do this for the study.

Residents who are very unwell and nearing the end of their lives will not be able to take part in this study.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you 50 years old or older?
  2. Do you currently live in a care home?
  3. If you cannot make decisions for yourself, do you have a family member or close friend willing to give permission for you?
  4. Are you not in the very last stages of life?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you are chosen to take part, the first step is that a member of the research team will visit your care home to explain the study and get your permission (or permission from your consultee). This visit will also include a member of your care home staff and, if you wish, a family member or friend.

Once you've agreed, the research team will arrange a follow-up appointment. During this appointment, you'll have an interview to gather some general information about your health and daily life. You'll also have a standard eye examination, much like one you'd get at an optician, and a hearing check. The eye exam won't involve trying on lots of different lenses to find your exact prescription. The whole process, including the interview and examinations, will be completed in one visit. If it's found you have earwax that's causing hearing problems, the team can gently remove it for you.

Potential risks and benefits

If you take part, you'll get a free check-up of your vision and hearing by the research team, and they will share the results with you and your carer. If any issues are found, like earwax affecting your hearing, the team can remove it for free. If glasses are needed or updated, they will provide information for your carer to arrange this. There are no significant risks to taking part in this study. You have the right to change your mind and stop participating at any time, even once the study has started.
