Bariatric Surgery and Exercise Interventions: Effects on Muscle

This study aims to understand how weight loss surgery (like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) changes your muscles. We also want to find out if doing specific resistance exercises (like lifting weights) after your surgery can make your muscles stronger and healthier. We're looking for up to 12 adults having weight loss surgery at Royal Derby Hospital to join. You'll have your muscles checked before and after surgery. Then, some people will do a special exercise programme for four weeks, while others will continue with their usual care. Your involvement will last for about 13-14 weeks in total, starting before your surgery.

What is this study about?

This research project is designed to understand what happens to your muscles when you have weight loss surgery. When people lose a lot of weight, especially after surgery, it's important to make sure their muscles stay strong and healthy. This study will help us learn more about these changes.

We also want to see if a particular type of exercise – called resistance exercise, which involves working your muscles against some form of weight or resistance – can be a good way to help people build or keep muscle strength after their weight loss surgery. This could lead to better recovery and long-term health for patients.

This is a small, exploratory study, meaning we're trying to gather initial information to help plan larger studies in the future. The findings from this research could be very important in helping doctors and other healthcare professionals give the best advice and support to people recovering from weight loss surgery.

Key takeaways

  • This study explores how weight loss surgery affects muscles.
  • It tests if a specific exercise programme helps muscle strength after surgery.
  • Participation involves muscle checks and possibly a 4-week exercise plan.
  • It's for adults (18-70) having weight loss surgery at Royal Derby Hospital.
  • The study lasts about 13-14 weeks in total.

Who may be eligible?

You might be able to join this study if you are an adult between 18 and 70 years old, and you are planned to have weight loss surgery (either a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) at the Royal Derby Hospital. You also need to be able to understand the study and agree to take part.

However, you won't be able to join if your doctors have decided that weight loss surgery isn't suitable for you, or if you have certain severe health problems like very serious heart or kidney failure. Also, if your BMI (a measure of your weight compared to your height) is 60 or more, you wouldn't be able to participate. The research team will check all these details with you.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you between 18 and 70 years of age?
  2. Are you having weight loss surgery (gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) at Royal Derby Hospital?
  3. Can you understand and agree to take part in a research study?
  4. Have your doctors confirmed you are suitable for weight loss surgery?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you decide to take part, you'll first have some muscle health checks before your weight loss surgery. After your surgery, at both 6 weeks and 10 weeks, you'll have similar muscle checks again. Around 6 weeks after your surgery, you'll be put into one of two groups by chance: one group will do a special 4-week resistance exercise programme, and the other group will continue with their standard care. The total time you'd be involved in the study, including care before and after surgery, would be about 13 to 14 weeks.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in this study may offer you the benefit of learning more about your own muscle health. The exercise programme, if you are in that group, could help improve your muscle strength and recovery. While very unlikely, there's a small risk of muscle soreness or minor injury from the exercise; however, you will be carefully guided. You also have the right to leave the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your usual medical care.

Common questions

What kind of exercises would I do?

If you're in the exercise group, you'd do specific resistance exercises, which might involve using light weights or resistance bands, tailored to your ability.

Will I know if I'm in the exercise group or the standard care group?

Yes, you will be told which group you are in after 6 weeks post-surgery.

How often would I need to do the exercises?

Specific details of the exercise programme will be given to participants in that group, but generally resistance exercise is done a few times a week.

Will my regular doctors still look after me?

Yes, your regular medical team will continue to provide your usual care throughout the study.

What if I feel unwell during the study?

You should always tell the study team and your regular doctor if you feel unwell at any point during your participation.
