Evaluation of Neoplasia With Artificial Intelligence in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

This study is looking at how well new computer programs, known as Artificial Intelligence (AI), can help doctors find early signs of cancer in the stomach and bowel (gastrointestinal neoplasms) during routine endoscopy procedures. These types of procedures currently involve a scope being passed into your body to look at the lining of your gut. The study will use pictures and videos from endoscopies that have already happened to test and improve these AI programs. Later, it will check how well the AI works during actual endoscopies. It's important to know that taking part won't change your usual medical care, and no extra tests or procedures will be done as part of the study.

What is this study about?

Imagine doctors using smart computer programs to help them spot tiny changes in your stomach or bowel that could be early signs of cancer. That's exactly what this study is exploring! It's called "Evaluation of Neoplasia With Artificial Intelligence in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy," which simply means they're testing how well Artificial Intelligence (AI) can detect and identify growths in your digestive system during an endoscopy.

Endoscopies are common procedures where a doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to look inside your body. The goal of this study is to see if AI can make finding these early changes even better and faster. It's being done in two main parts: first, they're using existing, anonymous pictures and videos from past endoscopies to train and improve the AI programs. Think of it like teaching a computer to recognise patterns. Once the AI is good at this, they will then check its performance during actual endoscopy procedures.

It's very important to understand that this study won't change your medical care or treatment in any way. If you happen to be part of the study, it will only involve collecting images and videos during your normal endoscopy procedure that you would have anyway. You won't have any extra tests, biopsies, or treatments because of this research. The aim is to make future endoscopies even more effective at catching problems early.

Key takeaways

  • Tests AI to find early gut problems during endoscopy.
  • Uses existing endoscopy images and videos.
  • No changes to your medical care or treatment.
  • No extra tests or procedures are involved.
  • Helps improve future detection of gut conditions.
  • You can withdraw at any time.

Who may be eligible?

You might be able to take part in this study if you are 18 years old or older, whether you are male or female. The main requirement is that you are already scheduled to have a gastroscopy (looking into your stomach) and/or a colonoscopy (looking into your bowel). This could be because you're having gut symptoms, or as part of a routine check-up or ongoing monitoring for bowel issues.

Before taking part, you would need to be willing and able to understand what the study involves and sign a consent form, showing you agree to participate. This ensures you have all the information and are comfortable with joining.

However, there are some reasons why you wouldn't be able to join. For example, if you have severe inflammation of the gullet (oesophagus) that's currently active and clearly visible during the endoscopy, or if your bowel preparation (the cleaning out of your bowel before a colonoscopy) isn't good enough for a clear examination. These conditions would make it difficult for the AI to get accurate information.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you 18 years old or older?
  2. Are you scheduled for a gastroscopy and/or colonoscopy?
  3. Are you able to understand the study and agree to take part?
  4. Do you *not* have severe oesophagitis that's active?
  5. Will your bowel preparation be good for your colonoscopy?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you take part in this study, you won't need to do anything extra beyond your regular endoscopy procedure. There are no additional appointments, medications, or follow-up visits specifically for the study. During your scheduled gastroscopy or colonoscopy, the medical team will simply collect images and videos. This is done during the standard procedure that you would be having anyway for your clinical care. The total duration of your involvement in the study is just the time it takes for your endoscopy procedure, and there's no long-term commitment. Your standard care will proceed as usual.

Potential risks and benefits

There are no direct benefits to you from taking part in this study, as it won't change your medical care. However, by participating, you will be helping to advance medical science, potentially leading to better and earlier detection of gastrointestinal problems for future patients. Since the study only involves collecting images and videos during your routine procedure, there are no additional risks or discomforts beyond those already associated with a standard endoscopy. You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason, and this will not affect your medical care.

Common questions

What is AI and how is it used in this study?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. In this study, it refers to computer programs designed to help doctors spot early changes in your gut during an endoscopy by analysing images and videos.

Will taking part in this study change my endoscopy or treatment?

No, absolutely not. Your endoscopy procedure and any treatment you receive will be exactly the same whether you take part in the study or not. No extra tests or changes to your care will be made.

Do I need to do anything special if I join?

No, you don't need to do anything special. The study will only involve collecting images and videos during your standard endoscopy procedure that you were having anyway.

Are there any extra risks if I participate?

There are no additional risks beyond those normally associated with having an endoscopy. The study doesn’t involve any extra tests or procedures.

Can I change my mind about participating?

Yes, you can withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason, and it will not affect your medical care in any way.
