Cities for Better Health Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative

This project, called 'Cities for Better Health Childhood Obesity Prevention,' is working in different cities across countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Africa, and Spain. Its main goal is to test community programs that help children aged 6-13 stay healthy and reduce the number of children who are overweight or obese. Researchers will see if these programs improve eating habits, encourage physical activity, and boost children's general well-being. They will measure changes in children's weight and how they feel about their health over one and two years. The idea is to find out what works best in real communities to support children in leading healthier lives.

What is this study about?

This research project, called the 'Cities for Better Health Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative,' is a big effort happening in various cities across different countries like the UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Africa, and Spain. The main idea is to find effective ways to help children aged 6 to 13 live healthier lives and prevent childhood obesity. This isn't about giving children medicine, but rather about creating and testing helpful programs within their communities, like in schools and local neighbourhoods.

The project specifically looks at how these community programs can encourage children to eat healthier foods, be more physically active, and generally feel better about their health. Researchers will measure the impact of these programs on children's weight (using BMI, a measure of weight relative to height) and their overall quality of life. They will check these things at the beginning, after one year, and after two years, to see if the programs are making a positive difference. They'll also explore if the programs help change children's habits related to diet and exercise.

To see if the programs work, researchers will compare groups of children in areas where the programs are running with similar groups of children in areas where they are not. This helps them understand what impact the programs alone are having. By taking part, thousands of children and families will help us understand the best ways to support healthier lifestyles for children in communities all over the world.

Key takeaways

  • It's a study looking at community programs to help children be healthier.
  • Children aged 6-13 in selected schools can take part.
  • No medicines are involved; only measurements and questions.
  • The study lasts about two years, with check-ups at the start, one year, and two years.
  • Your child's participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.

Who may be eligible?

To be part of this study, children need to attend one of the specific schools chosen for the project in the participating cities. If your child's school is involved, the research team will aim to choose a group of children from that school that reflects all the children there, especially in terms of age and whether they are boys or girls.

For any child to take part, their parent or legal guardian must give their full permission. This permission must be given *before* anything related to the study begins, like collecting any information. Your child must also be between 6 and 13 years old (inclusive of both ages) when you give your consent.

Children cannot take part if their parents don't give permission, or if the child themselves doesn't want to participate on the day measurements are being taken. Also, if a parent decides to withdraw their child from the study at any point, the child will no longer be included. Your decision is always respected.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Does my child attend one of the specific schools chosen for the study?
  2. Is my child between 6 and 13 years old?
  3. Am I, as their parent or guardian, willing to give my permission for them to take part?
  4. Is my child happy to participate in measurements and surveys?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If your child's school is selected and you agree for them to take part, it would involve your child having some measurements taken regarding their health and well-being. This would include measuring their height and weight, and potentially answering some questions about their diet and physical activity. These measurements would happen at the beginning of the study, and then again after about one year, and finally after around two years. There are no medications involved in this study, and no extra visits outside of the school. The total duration of your child's involvement would be about two years.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in this study could help us learn more about effective ways to prevent childhood obesity and improve children's health across different communities. This knowledge could benefit many children in the future. There are no notable risks with this study, as it primarily involves taking measurements and answering questions, similar to what might happen in a school health check. You and your child have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason, and it will not affect your child's care or schooling. Your input is entirely voluntary.
