Satiety, Microbiome, Appetite Regulation, and Tracking Energy Across Targeted Snacks: Chronic Study

This study wants to find out if eating a special high-fibre snack bar for 4 weeks can help you feel less hungry and improve your gut health. It involves healthy adults in the UK who snack regularly. Participants will eat two snack bars every day for 4 weeks (either the special bar or a control bar similar to typical UK snacks). You'll track your hunger, complete online surveys, provide a stool sample, and take body measurements at the start and end. Everything is done remotely from your home. The aim is to see if this type of snack can make a positive difference to how you feel and your digestive system in the long run.

What is this study about?

Many of us snack every day, and these snacks can make up a big part of what we eat. However, typical snacks in the UK often don't contain much fibre and can be high in sugar and unhealthy fats. This is important because fibre is really good for your health, especially your gut. This study wants to see if replacing your usual snacks with a specially designed high-fibre bar can make a difference to your hunger levels and overall gut health.

Researchers will compare this new high-fibre snack bar against a standard snack bar, which is similar to what many people already eat. By doing this, they can tell if any changes seen in participants are truly because of the special ingredients in the new bar, rather than just from changing snacking habits generally. The main goal is to find out if eating the high-fibre bar helps people feel less hungry throughout the day.

They also want to look at other important things, like how the bars affect your gut bacteria (your 'gut microbiome'), your bowel habits, any digestive discomfort you might feel, your mood, energy levels, and even your sleep quality. This study is designed to understand the long-term effects of regularly eating these specific snack bars.

Key takeaways

  • Study explores impact of a high-fibre snack bar on hunger and gut health.
  • Participation involves eating two snack bars daily for 4 weeks from home.
  • Main goals are to assess hunger levels and changes in gut bacteria.
  • Suitable for healthy UK adults, aged 35-65, who snack regularly.
  • No clinic visits needed; all tasks are completed remotely.

Who may be eligible?

This study is looking for healthy adults, aged between 35 and 65, who live in the UK and usually snack at least twice a day. It's especially for those who don't get much fibre in their diet (less than 20 grams a day).

However, there are some reasons why you might not be able to join. For example, if you have a very low or high body mass index (BMI), or if you have allergies to any ingredients in the snack bars. You also can't take part if you have certain gut conditions like Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, or irritable bowel syndrome, or if you've recently had major surgery, a heart attack, or stroke.

Also, if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, you won't be able to join. If you've recently taken certain medications (like antibiotics or strong pain killers) or have used other supplements, or have conditions like diabetes, these might also prevent you from participating. Please check the full list carefully.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. I am between 35 and 65 years old.
  2. I live in the UK.
  3. I usually eat snacks at least twice a day.
  4. I am generally healthy and don't have severe gut conditions.
  5. I am not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
  6. I haven't taken certain medications or supplements recently that might affect the study.

What does participation involve?

If you join this study, it will last for 7 weeks in total, and everything can be done from your home. For 4 of these weeks, you will need to eat two snack bars every day, instead of your usual snacks. These bars will be sent to you.

At the start and end of the study, you'll need to complete some health measurements. This includes filling out a health questionnaire, keeping a food diary for 3 days, and a separate survey about your hunger for 3 days. You'll also need to take some body measurements (like your weight) and provide a stool (poo) sample. Throughout the study, you'll fill out a short online survey (which takes less than 5 minutes) once a week.

Potential risks and benefits

Taking part in this study may help researchers learn more about how certain snacks affect hunger and gut health, which could benefit others in the future. You might also gain a better understanding of your own diet and health. However, there are no guaranteed personal health benefits from joining. Potential risks are generally low, but could include minor digestive changes from the snack bars or discomfort from collecting samples. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your medical care.
